Color Nirvana: The India Collection by OPI

-
-
Color has the energy to excite, to soothe, to charm. And there has never been a better, brighter moment for color than Spring/Summer 2008! The season’s sunny, high-energy palette for nails and lips is the ideal complement to the new fashions and it’s all here in the India Collection by OPI.

Luscious fuchsias, corals, oranges, and reds look fresh now on nails and lips. In the mood for hot pink? Try I’m Indi-a Mood for Love. Bring a splash of color to fingertips and toes (especially in open-toed wedge heels) with MonSooner or Later (rich orange-red) and Keys to My Karma (vivid red). And if your karma calls for coral, try Lunch at the Delhi on nails or lips. These shades are wonderful with the fashion palette of rosy pink, magenta, turquoise, yellow (the new “it” color), tangerine, and geranium red, often seen as splashes against nude and natural tones and in bold, graphic prints.

Lighter shades for nails are so right when worn with the season’s choice of alluring, feminine fabrics. Try pale opal Get Me to the Taj on Time with delicate dresses of flowing chiffon, organza, tulle, and liquid jersey (very romantic on toes during a midnight walk on the beach). Choose Moon Over Mumbai (dove grey) with spring’s must-have dress, the body-skimming sheath, in watercolor tones of blush, ivory, lilac, light blue, pistachio, or taupe. And candy-carnation ElePhantastic Pink nails complement fashion details like sheer overlays, tiered skirts, ruffles, and pleats.

Neutrals and metallics add a sophisticated touch of color. Royal Rajah Ruby, a jeweled burgundy, and Charmed by a Snake, a bold bronze, look modern worn on nails or lips; shimmery gold Curry Up Don’t Be Late!, deliciously deep Black Cherry Chutney, and dark indigo Yoga-ta Get this Blue! are must-haves for pedicures. Try these shades with fashion’s long, fluid tunics and loosely cut trousers in mineral tones, as well with high-waisted pants and slouchy jackets (including an updated spin on the safari jacket).

This season of color also features wide-brimmed hats, brightly colored bangles and clutch purses, and India-inspired beading and metallic embroidery embellishments.
Let the India Collection intrigue you with colors wrapped in the energy of the season – chic, warm, and bright.
Look to the colors of the INDIA Collection by OPI to complement this Summer’s fashion and beauty with style!

Style Staples: The Wrap Dress by Diane Von Furstenberg

In 1972 Diane von Furstenberg landed on the fashion scene with a simple, yet radical, credo: "Feel like a woman. Wear a dress." Five million wrap dresses later and the gorgeous wife of Austro-Italian Prince Egon von Furstenberg graced the November 1976 cover of Newsweek, touted as the most marketable designer since Coco Chanel—and a new icon for liberated women. After a stint with her own cosmetics line and a home furnishings collection, Brussels-born von Furstenberg stepped away from the fashion limelight and moved to Paris, only to reenter in 1992 with Silk Assets, a pioneer in television-shopping with its debut collection selling out in less than two hours. With the help of her daughter-in-law Alexandra, von Furstenberg relaunched her clothing line in 1997, and a full sportswear line soon followed. The iconic wrap dress became the symbol for a new generation of women.

Ask The Editor: "Always be a first-rate version of yourself..."

Here are some answers to some recent stye dillemas I've answered:

Where is a good place to find good quality clothes for a cheaper price? Kara, Michigan, 34
Great stores for lower priced quality merchandise are H&M, Old Navy, and Target. All of these stores start at comparably lower prices that other retailers and typically offer sales on merchandise relatively quickly. I recently srumbled upon a basic black dress at Target for $4.98. Incredible! The other great thing about these three store is that they offer affordable clothing for all family members!

I'm totally flat-chested and this is an issue for the summer when wearing a bathing suit. What should I do? Daun, New York, 23
Well there are basically two ways to go about dealing with this situation:
1.) Flaunt and celebrate your svelte figure by wearing a triangle or bandeau styled bikini top.
2.) Enhance your cup size by wearing a cleavage enhancing padded push-up bra.
I actually think the first solution may be a little more in vogue these days. However if you're feeling insecure about your cup size than getting the miracle bra may be a good option. The answer to your second question regarding whether or not it will actually "push you up" is a little more complex. The result actually depends on the shape of your overall chest. If the chest and shoulder area are a little more pronounced you get better results; where as a slghtly concave chest would not produce as dramatic of a change. My recommendation: order a few styles from Victoria's Secret (bandeau, triangle, miracle) try them on, model for friends, get some opinions and keep the best choice. No matter what you decide just remember, shopping for a bathing suit is challenging for all women no matter what shape and size they may be!

If I wore a black dress with black tights, what color shoes should I wear and what color jacket or sweater? Maya, Connecticut, 28
If the dress is for a night or formal occassion wear with a metallic shoe (gold/silver/bronze) and complement with a metallic clutch or jewelry. If this is a daywear or spring look, go for one of this seasons killer bright peep toe pumps or ballet flats. Also a bright waist belt would look great with his look. A black pea coat or trench is versatile enough to go with either look. A denim jacket could also work in a warmer climate.

My current style is jeans, Uggs and Hollister Co but I am really feeling the flats and cute tops with straight leg jeans which have recently become very popular. I really want to change my style but doubt I'll be able to pull it off ... Chelsea, San Franciso, 17
Sounds easy enough... Most people who want to change their style have absolutely no idea what style they would like to embrace. The latest trends of ballet flats, skinny jeans, and cute empire styled tops are certainly fabulous. Your ability to "pull it off" is completely contingent on your own believability factor. If you feel uncomfortable and like you're trying to be someone you're not in this look - that is the vibe you will most likely send and as an end result you'll come across as "not pulling it off". On the other hand, if you own your new look - it will be all yours! My recommendation, ease into your new look. Maybe start by first ditching the Uggs in lieu of some basic ballet flats. Once you get comfortable with this start trying out some of the new "cuter" tops you admire. Just remember, as in the words of Judy Garland "always be a first-rate version of yourself instead of a second-rate version of somebody else!"

Fashion Theory: Establishing Your Clothing Budget

I get emails almost daily regarding what is considered an appropriate amount to set aside for a clothing budget. First let me start by saying that since shopping can be somewhat of an emotional experience for women I believe setting a clothing allowance is absolutely necessary. How we get to that magical number however is not the same for everyone.

I suggested to Aisha, a recent client, that she invest in a durable leather handbag. Aisha argued that she simply couldn't afford to spend upwards of $300. The remarkable thing about this was that once we analyzed her recent clothing purchases we realized that she was spending about $300 monthly on clothing! Aisha was actually suffering from sticker shock and had kind of become accustomed to buying quantity instead of quality. The end result was that her closet was essentially bursting at the seams with discount and poorly constructed clothing. In the end, Aisha was in effect spending $3,600 annually (nearly 10% of her $37,000 salary) on a wardrobe that lacked both function and style.

Establishing a budget is a very difficult question to answer from a general perspective because everyone's financial and clothing situation is different. If you have a job that allows you to work in a casual environment where some of your everyday clothing can be incorporated into you daily work outfits, I would estimate the overall clothing allowance to be somewhere around 7%. For those that work in a more professional office environment where you are expected to dress the part and dressing the part may overall affect your promotion-ability factor; I would estimate around 10% of your salary. Keep in mind, this budget should include the costs of alterations and professional cleaning services. It is also important to note that if you are maintaining a household on this salary, i.e. you have children or a spouse you must allocate a portion of this amount to their clothing allowance as well.

Example 1: Aisha works in a business casual environment. Her salary is $37,000. Her clothing allowance is: $2,590.
-
Example 2: Elaine works in a professional business environment. Her salary is $85,000. Her clothing allowance is: $8,500.

1. Invest in Investment Pieces: Investment pieces are just that - "investment" pieces! So, don't be afraid to spend a little more money on the classics which are required to create a functional wardrobe. Discount stores such as Marshalls, Century 21, and DSW could produce some very valuable finds, however it is important that you don't become distracted and divert from the standard classics when shopping at these stores. For classics, I recommend shopping at a formula store. A formula store is typically a specialty retail store that stocks key basics. Some great formula stores are Gap, Ann Taylor LOFT and The Limited. The great thing about a formula store is that once you find the sizes and styles that suit you best, you can shop there season to season with little difficulty. These are great stores for purchasing a classic a-line skirt, trousers, jeans, button-ups, and tees, tanks and camis of variety.

2. Don't Be a Label Whore: When it comes to beautiful dresses, handbags, shoes and scarves there are some designers that are simply ahead of the par, however to simply focus all of your efforts into collecting clothing that has a designer label tag regardless of how flattering or well-fitting the item is - is simply not a good option.

3. Do Apply The Cost-Per-Wear Concept: To get back to the example I gave previously of Aisha spending $300 on a leather handbag. The leather handbag is an investment piece which can be carried for months or possibly years to come. If Aisha carried this handbag for just six months her cost per wear would be $50. I discuss the Cost per Wear Concept in more detail in a recent post.

4. Don't Charge: I know to some people this may seem unthinkable; however I think whenever you shop with credit cards you are always tempted to get caught up in the emotional buzz of said item and go well over your budget. If you're carrying a lot of debt (particularly from past shopping activities) you really need to think long and hard about plunking 7-10% of your income towards clothing. A simple rule of thumb I often use is "Don't buy it unless you can afford to buy two." No, I'm not saying that you should buy two of everything; rather what I am suggesting is that every time you buy something, you take that same dollar amount and apply it towards paying off debt or towards savings. So in effect, that $300 handbag will now cost you $600; $300 to purchase and another $300 in savings or debt payment. The amount of your clothing budget should match or exceed the amount you are saving or applying towards debt repayment.

5. Make It Automatic: Now that you have established your clothing budget, the only sure fire way to stick to it is to make it automatic. Here are two great ideas for actually staying on budget.
Low Tech Option: If your budget allows for $200 to be spent a month on clothing. Place this amount of cash in an envelope. When shopping for clothing only spend what is in the envelope. Once this amount is gone you have exhausted your clothing budget for the month.
High Tech Option: Set up a separate checking account (I suggest an ING Orange account) and have a specific amount deposited into your account periodically; for example $50 a week. When shopping for clothing only use the debit card associated with this checking account. The nice thing about this option is that if you are not someone who shops on a weekly or monthly basis the money continues to grow towards your much anticipated shopping spree.

6. Maximize Your Budget: A pair of Jimmy Choo shoes is no longer $500. It's $500 minus the $165 you will get for selling them on EBay the following year. EBay and consignment stores are a great source for stretching your clothing allowance. If you don't have a lot of designer clothing in your closet you can still receive some financial benefit from making a tax-deductible donation to your local goodwill or charity.

What I Just Bought: Stylish Finds at Smart Prices

Contrary to popular belief, there actually are mail-order retailers that offer stylish options at affordable prices. Newport News as of late has so to speak "upped their game" and as a result, many goodies abound these days! Of course, it does take some combing through some of the more dowdy items which are reserved for the base mail-order crowd. However, after some strategic mouse-clicking I managed to stumble upon some great pieces at amazing prices. Alas, a shopping spree that doesn't give my Visa card a hangover!

High-waist suspender pencil skirt $39
High-waist pencil skirt with elastic, clip-on suspenders. Back zip and slit; knee-length, 27" long (25" Petite). Woven polyester/rayon with spandex for comfort; lined. Dry clean. Imported.

Okay, what's better than a pencil skirt? In my world where it's typically a dash between the office and dinner and drinks with associates, the pencil skirt is a wardrobe staple! Pencil skirts are perfect from making that transition from work to play. This piece is definitley no exception. The suspenders are both fashion forward and super chic. Also, I love the way they styled this with yellow pumps. It's all about bright shoes this Spring!

Ruffled bodysuit $29 each (I picked up two!)
Stretch-poplin bodysuit with tuxedo ruffles; jersey knit panty with snap close. Button front and cuffs. Cotton/spandex. Machine wash. Imported.

If you thought the bodysuit was "passe", your wrong. When it comes to pencil fit skirts and trousers these body conscious pieces are a savior. The bodysuit lays close to your body all day for a form fitting pulled together look. This piece is great under suits or worn alone!

Tunic-length V-neck sweater $25 (on sale; I got three!)
Ultra-flattering, tunic-length V-neck sweater with feminine ruffled cuffs. Soft, cashmere-like combed cotton in a sleek jersey knit; ribbed trim. Machine wash. Imported.

There's nothing more flattering than a V-neck tunic length sweater. This item is a great Winter to Spring transitional piece. These tunics look great when paired with skinny jeans and boots or leggings and pumps. At $25 these sweater are a steal, I picked up three of them in Emerald, Dark Raspberry and Black hues.
-
Safari-style shirtdress $49
Combed cotton poplin shirtdress has 3/4 roll-up sleeves with button tabs, hidden button front, buckle belt. 25" long, (23" Petite). Machine wash. Imported.

Needs no explanation, simply classic! My only gripe here is that I wish this piece was available in a few more neutral colors. The only alternative to black offered is purple which really does not do the safari style justice. I would have adored this piece in khaki or navy.

Shape fx® Embroidered halter suit $69
Halter suit with gorgeous, waist-defining embroidery at the empire seam. Full power-mesh lining gives ultimate control all over. V-neck with bust-enhancing removable soft cups; mid-cut leg for moderate coverage. Ties behind neck. Nylon with Lycra support. Hand Wash. Imported
-
Trust me. It's never too early to start swimsuit shopping. With all the trial and error that goes along with swimsuit fitting, I know this much is true. I've been a nomad clad two piece donning diva for some time, but the new one pieces are defnitely far from matronly. This shape fx halter swimsuit with waist beading is just a dream!

Fashion Theory: Your Style Personality

Clothes are often an expression of your spirit and character. What category best suits you?

The Traditionalist:
Style Staples: The basics - t-shirts, tanks, blazers, classic white shirt, trousers, and blue jeans. Embrace: Tradition - stick with pieces that stand the test of time, such as the classic trench, turtlenecks, and pearls.
Don't Do: Trends. If intrigued by a trend incorporate it into your wardrobe in a subtle way, such as with an accessory like a handbag, hairclip, or jewelry.
Rule #1: Focus on clean lines. Stick with sophisticated silhouettes, stay away from frivolous styles and cuts.
Palette: Stick with the neutrals - black, grey, white, and navy are classic. Other colors tend to be classics such as red and blue. Tend to stay away from prints and bright colors.
Personality: Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron

The Diva:
Style Staples: Sexy is the mantra. Clothes that accentuate the hourglass. Deep-V's and high slits are de rigueur.
Don't Do: Sack dresses, masculine tailoring, anything with too much coverage.
Rule #1: Confidence is by far your best accessory! Be sure to pose the perfect balance of sex appeal and class.
Palette: Brights, whites, and black. Print and patterns should be avoided as they tend to detract from your figure.
Personality: Salma Hayek, Halle Berry, Jessica Simpson

The Bohemian:
Style Staples: Vintage pieces, layering - combining multiple textures adds appeal.
Don't Do: Sloppy. Choose breezy gowns over bell bottoms.
Rule #1: Play with prints - earthy and ethnic paisleys, florals and retro patterns all emphasize the haute hippie look.
Palette: Plain shades and neutrals. Tend to opt for earth tones and vivid colors.
Personality: Kate Hudson, Maggie Gyllenhal, Kirsten Dunst

The Fashionista:
Style Staples: New designers, avant-garde cuts, bold looks.
Don't Do: What everyone else is doing. Be ahead of the curve and let the masses follow.
Rule #1: Don't be afraid to experiment. Just because it hasn't been done yet doesn't mean it shouldn't! Palette: Unique colors and trimmings. Brights, leopards, and feathers.
Personality: Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham

The Eclectics:
Style Staples: Bright colors, loud patterns, frills, and furs.
Don't Do: Safe. Follow your heart when it comes to picking out clothes. Forget what's appropriate or safe.
Rule #1: Mix and match. Try a tailored jacket over a funky frock.
Palette: Anything goes.
Personality: Uma Thurman, Drew Barrymore, Gwen Stefani

Fashion Icon: Carrie Underwood

"If I didn't do what I do, nobody would ever look twice at me. I'm a blender . . . I'm not, like, anything special." – Carrie Underwood, being modest to PEOPLE

Carrie Underwood has donned and dazzled in everything from Badgely Mishka to Monique Lhullier. The former American Idol winner has impecable style both on and off the red carpet!

Red Carpet Review: Best Dressed at 2008 Grammy Awards Show

Who do you think was the best dressed on Grammy night? My vote goes to Carrie Underwood for the beutiful and unexpected Zuhair Murad frock. This girl definitely knows how to shine on the red carpet! Other great looks were donned by Natasha Bedingfield, Rihanna, and (surprise) Miley Cyrus! Alicia Keys went super elegant - the look was good - but I felt it was a little too dressy and not edgy enough for the Grammy's. Nelly Furtado's dress was nice but the hair and jewelry made her look freakishly old. Looks by Fergie, Beyonce, and Faith Hill were all a little too typical for me....

Carrie Underwood
The best female country vocal performance winner goes for high drama in her plunging floral Zuhair Murad and long blonde locks.

Beyonce
The singer is simply spectacular in a pale blue tulle and silver beaded Elie Saab haute couture gown – and newly blonde shoulder-length locks.

Fergie
Calling this year "a very special moment for me," the pop nominee is a ray of sunlight in her Calvin Klein yellow gown and Cartier diamonds.

Miley Cyrus
The Hannah Montana star looks all grown up in her white sequined Celine dress and Sergio Rossi heels and clutch.

Rihanna
The "Umbrella" nominee sticks to her edgy and cool style in a ruffled and feathered cobalt blue Zac Posen and Chopard jewels. As for her newly short do, the nominee says she "loves it" and if she changes it, she'd go "a little shorter, if anything."

Alicia Keys
The Grammy winner sweeps down the red carpet in a custom Giorgio Armani Privé sapphire duchess satin gown and Diamond in the Rough earrings. The singer says it "felt like the right time to mix it up" with her edgy Mohawk-inspired hair.

Natash Bedingfield
The British singer calls her purple Reem Acra gown "very flowy and glamourous" – we definitely agree!

Faith Hill
The country superstar is the ultimate sophisticate in her one-shouldered black gown and sleek coiff.

Nelly Furtado
The singer and nominee is a modern goddess in her bright blue Arthur Mendoza gown, who says the best part of her blonde hair is "getting away with a little bit more."

Fashion Theory: How Many... The Fundamentals of a Well Stocked Closet

Part of having a well stocked closet is having a closet that not necessarily focuses on quantity, yet reflects an aspect of quality. This is mainly derived by purchasing key pieces which are transistional in nature, yet reflect your personal style. The idea here is to focus on purchasing these foundation pieces in high qualitycuts and fabrics yet being open to the idea of replacing frequently as these are these pieces will ultimately determine the style and cohesiveness of your overall wardrobe.
How Many...

Sweaters: 4 (neutral or brights)
Preferably cashmere-blends (yet lightweight blends which can be worn well into the Spring). You should take some analysis and decide which cut is more flattering for you. The V-neck is a universally flattering neckline. Cardigans and turtlenecks are also flatteringfot most figures.

Tees & Tanks: 7 (neutral or brights)
I can't deny the importance of a great fitting tee or tank top. I tend to stick with black, white and greys. However tanks are a great way of hopping on that new hot pink trend that your not so sure about with little commitment. Simple tees and tanks come in super handy on those days when there is "simply nothing to wear". Tees and tanks are also great when enhanced with fun jewelry such as beads or bangles. A colorful waistbelt over a simple tee is also a great option. I've done everything from $44 Vince tanks to 2 for $10 Old Navy tanks. Buy often and restock often.

Coats & Jackets: 4 (neutral or brights)
Classic Trench, Biker or Motorcycle Jacket (Denim or Leather), Elegant Coat (Wool or Capelet Style), Sporty Outerwear Coat.

Pants/Skirt: 2 each (1 black, 1 neutral)
2 office appropriate (wide-leg, pin-strip, plaid,wool, a-line)
2 evening appropriate (tuxedo pant, satin pencil skirt, high-waisted styles)
A vest is also a great suit piece which could be added to this ensemble. Vest's are a great go-to piece - they ae great dressed up with a skirt and heels or down with pencil fit jeans and ballet flats.

Suit: 2 (1 black, 1 neutral)
Opt for a form fitting style so you will easily be able to take your suit from day to night. To get more dash out of your suit, purchase a blazer with both a matching skirt and pants.

Dresses: 4 (black)
1 short for cocktails, 1 office appropriate, 1 daywear, and 1 knock em dead dress! Color: Black
Not into dresses? Just purchase one little black dress and I promise you'll be hooked! Since I have such a curvy physique I tend to stay away from dresses however after purchasing my first little black dress, I was hooked! They're easy, figure flattering and always in vogue!

Jeans: 3 (dark-denim is the most flattering)
1 Slim-Cut or Skinny Fit (Depending on your physique)
1 Boot-cut Dark Denim (Great for dressing up with heels)
1 Classic Fit (Great for dressing down with flip-flops and ballet flats) My personal faves are classic fit NY Wash Seven For All Mankind - they're the 501's of Seven.

Shoes: 3 (black, bronze)
1 classic black pump, 1 ballet flat, 1 evening shoe in a bronze tone (silver, gold or copper).
Okay we all know you can NEVER have too many shoes. However for starters, I do believe it is important that you have a few key styles in classic black. After that, feel free to run the gamut. Funs shoes are the perfect fashion accessory and anyone who knows me knows I have plenty of them!

Handbags: 3 (any color)
1 well-structured tote. 1 evening clutch. (Brights are okay - avoid logos, patterns, or trendy styles.) Obviously, if your budget allows, splurging for the "it" bag of the season is definitlley an option. Just be sure to cover your basics first!

New York Fashion Week: Backstage at Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2008 Show

NEW YORK, February 5, 2008 – Marc by Marc Jacobs usually follows the designer's main show by about 18 hours. But with his signature collection scheduled for the last day of New York fashion week, looking at his diffusion line this season felt a bit like reading tea leaves. Does the eighties-ish new-wave vibe of the clothes on today's runway in any way predict what we'll see come Friday?A blue tweed shift with a stand-up collar and a drop waist, accessorized to the hilt with shades, beret, and checked bag, kicked things off. Following that, Jacobs showed a few pairs of pants, slouchy and full through the upper legs. But this was a girly collection, long on dresses and skirts. The former came in podlike shapes (a supersized green and black houndstooth) or nipped at the waist above flaring hoop skirts (a witty fishnet print), while the latter appeared as bubbles, cheerleader minis, and lamp shades. Also in the mix was some great outerwear—everything from a belted, boxy man's single-breasted jacket to a black trapeze coat with a checkerboard of patent leather below the waist. We'll have to wait a few days for the big reveal, but there was plenty in this bright, playful lineup to keep Jacobs' fans happy in the meantime.– Nicole Phelps

Ready To Wear: Cental Park Meets Colorado at Ralph Lauren Fall 2008 Collection

NEW YORK, February 8, 2008 – The antler chandeliers spray-painted gold were the first clue that we were in for a change of scenery. After throwing what will go down in fashion history as one of its grandest parties ever for his 40th anniversary last September, Ralph Lauren swapped Central Park for Colorado. His Western family retreat, the Double RL Ranch, has provided inspiration for many of his famous signatures, and he reprised several of them today with superb results.Lauren opened with a series of city dresses and suits in cashmere herringbone and black double face cut close to the body. But he didn't linger long in this urban terrain (smart thing; the leopard-print pieces weren't a good fit with the rest of the collection). Soon we were heading West to the land of green border-stripe swing jackets, red-and-black buffalo plaid suits, and cozy blanket coats. He worked these Ralph-isms with customary expertise, coming up with unexpected combinations like a fitted plaid hunting jacket with a spry little mini in a buffalo check, or a cashmere plaid shirt unbuttoned to reveal a glam necklace (Lauren lined up a stunning list of jewelers for the show, including the Gem Palace) and tucked into a sassy tulle skirt covered in beads and feathers. Of course, many of these outfits will look just as at home in Manhattan as on the range. The plaids lingered after dark—some, like a winning high-necked gown that fanned out below the knees, more successfully than others. But his evening wasn't one-note. He showed supple draped velvets, two of the prettiest in a deep hunter green and a garnet decorated with beads. And for something more dramatic, there was a black tulle gown with a cutaway back. Lauren knows that wherever his ladies take themselves, country or city, they always pack a party dress.– Nicole Phelps

Ready To Wear: Everything's coming Up Dresses at BCBG MaxAzria Fall 2008 Runway Show!

NEW YORK, February 1, 2008 – What a difference a year makes. In 12 little months, BCBG Max Azria has blossomed from a girl into a woman, with a Fall collection of elegant jersey dancer dresses and (admittedly, a bit more awkward) Katharine Hepburn-style tailoring—all in a restrained, dare we say sober, palette. "BCBG has evolved so many times," says creative director Lubov Azria backstage. "This is a direction that feels wearable and clean." All of New York seems to be growing up this season, actually, as—at least judging from the early shows—body-conscious sophistication is finally toppling the cult of the sack. Here, every look was cinched at the waist with a rugged leather and wool belt, which also added a needed edge to soigné silhouettes. Details like trapunto seaming, cartridge pleats, and sexy flashes of skin did the same. As the show progressed, the girlishness that is still a necessary component of a contemporary line finally reared its pretty little head in minidresses of colored satin and pleated silk crepe short enough to qualify for the "Dress or blouse?" guessing game. Just the dose of fun the doctor ordered.– Meenal Mistry

New York Fashion Week: Backstage at Badgley Mishka Fall 2008 Show

NEW YORK, February 5, 2008 – Mark Badgley and James Mischka said Bianca Jagger was their woman for Fall. Clues that the seventies were the duo's starting point included a brick-red crinkled leather jacket worn with a matching, flared above-the-knee skirt; and an apricot turtleneck and boot-cut glen plaid pants worn with a little broadtail-and-fox vest. They aren't the kind of designers to launch themselves willy-nilly into a theme. So worked in among the floral shirtwaists, floppy felt hats, and high suede boots were the kind of reliable, timeless clothes that the ladies-who-lunch live for: a pencil skirtsuit in a buff tweed shot through with metallic thread, or wool-crepe tuxedo pants worn with a chiffon blouse and a little silk-faille jacket with short mink sleeves.Badgley Mischka's daywear is always sensible enough, and this season is no different. But anyone with a Bergdorf's charge card knows that their raison d'être is eveningwear. Two of the best gala looks were an amethyst organza creation hand-painted with impressionistic flowers, and a strapless bustier style with a lace overlay studded with crystals. The spare elegance of these looks made you wish the boys had left the silver and gold sequins, splashed liberally on other big-night dresses, back at the disco.– Nicole Phelps

Runway to Reality: Bridging the Gap - Gap's Fresh Fall 2008 Line

Classics Studies

Patrick Robinson Gives the Gap a Welcome New Edge

February 3, 2008 – "Taking classics and messing with them until they become fashion." It sounds easy enough, but the Gap's recent history suggests otherwise. It's well-known that the brand has been struggling to stay pertinent in a retail market that's become saturated with high-low fast-fashion labels. Enter Patrick Robinson, the man responsible for the above quote. The former Perry Ellis designer was the center of attention today at a one-hour presentation of the company’s new Fall lineup. Surrounded by reporters, he explained how he and his creative team plan to turn around the fortunes of the huge brand, one pair of jeans at a time."The big message in all this is about taking American sportswear and making it relevant," he said. "That translates into cutting women's jeans with a really wide leg, giving a mackintosh the right oversize proportions, and slimming down and cropping cargo pants so they're fitted." Beyond fit, it also means elevating the color palette (Fall's is long on dusty plaids and many shades of gray) and the fabric quality, and making sure down the line that the company's women's, men's, kids', maternity, and body lines all look connected. That's a lot to bite off, but Robinson and co. made a confident start today. It was the kind of collection where editors mentally tick off all the pieces they want to add to their wardrobes. The outerwear looked particularly strong—from a boxy, boy-cut peacoat to wool flannel puffer jackets and vests to shearlings in both black and a natural tan. Pants, be they trouser-cut or cropped and cuffed, looked smart enough to carry off as designer. And there were scads of layerable knits, thin and chunky. Pierre Hardy's shoes for the brand also helped kick things up a notch.Right now, the Gap has several points working in its favor when it comes to getting customers into its stores. The imminent recession we've all been hearing about, not to mention the ever-higher prices being asked of European imports, are keeping women from buying big-ticket items. The deciding factor, though, may be how good these clothes look. –Nicole Phelps
