Runway to Reality: Georgia O'Keefe meets Cold Mountain Rachel Roy's Fall 2008 Collection

NEW YORK, January 31, 2008 – Georgia O'Keeffe meets Cold Mountain for the Park Avenue set? That would be one way to describe Rachel Roy's Fall collection. Before her show, the designer said she was interested in the intersection between Native American and Colonial styles, but brought up-to-date for the women of today. It was a tricky proposition, though for the most part Roy pulled it off. If the geometric black-on-gray jacquard used for a tulip skirt and a belted blanket cardigan that topped a tuxedo shirt came off somewhat heavy-handed, there were plenty of other pieces that finessed the conceit in a more subtle way. Take, for instance, a black wool suit with an extra-long jacket worn with a flounced white silk blouse, or a pumpkin silk sleeveless dress with a bow at the waist and a statement necklace of feathers and beads. Here Roy caught that mix of rawness and polish she was looking for.– Nicole Phelps

Seven Questions With: The Editor - Stilletos, Scarborough, and Sangria Coexist!

Three-inch stilettos, Scarborough, and Sangria all coexist in the world of Apresenta Concept's stylish founder. What's your go-to outfit? There's still nothing quite like a well-fitted A-neck tank, a pair of dark-rinse jeans, and a pair of killer heels. I collect vintage jewelry so I'll touch up this very basic look with vintage beads and baubles. You also can't deny the chic-ness of a great fitted jacket or vest. How long does it take you to get dressed for work? Most people wouldn't believe it, but it actaully takes about ten minutes. My closet is coordinated by color, so it virtually takes no-time to pull together an outfit. The trends your obsessed with right now... I actually tend to avoid trends. I generally stick to classic tried and true styles, however I am known to follow the latest color trends. Last year, designers put the color regal back on the map - and I think it constitutes as one of the most beautiful colors. Spring 08 is bound to be fun with lots of the primary brights looming upon us. I think canary is the most appealing at the moment. The designer or label you're obsessed with right now... I've kind of developed a penchant for Botkier handbags. The designs offer functionality, detailing, and durability. What goes in your carry-on? Latest issue of In-Style magazine, Fiji bottled water, Moto-Q, ionic blow dryer, Badgely Mishka perfume and stilettos. Favorite Vacaton Spot? Grand Velas Suite & Spa resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It's a postcard setting, with bright beaches and palm trees. Puerto Vallarta is also a great destination for handmade jewelry and artwork. How do you entertain? Prefer to do appetizers and drinks as opposed to sit down dinners. I love cooking, so my guests can expect to be indulged with exotic tapas and cocktails. My Sangria is a crowd favorite. If you weren't in fashion where would you be? I'd be a political analyst. When I'm not eating, living, and breathing fashion - It's all about politics - I actually think I'm developing a crush on Joe Scarborough!

Fashion Icon: Kate Bosworth

Fresh-faced California-born actress Kate Bosworth gained notice as a teenager in 1998's The Horse Whisperer and the WB series Young Americans. But her breakthrough came when she played a sun-kissed surf queen in the John Stockwell-directed hit Blue Crush. Since then, Bosworth has mixed edgy indies (the fall-of-a-porn-star tale Wonderland) with more mainstream fare, such as 2004's Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. The same year, Bosworth costarred with Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darrin's wife Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea, and she played Lois Lane in the 2006 summer blockbuster Superman Returns. The actress' on-again, off-again romance with Orlando Bloom frequently landed her in gossip columns over their four years together, but in 2006, her weight loss became an even more buzzed about topic. Still, the blond beauty looks to have built a strong foundation for a career that is likely just beginning.

Latin for "leather bag", Bulga's functional and no-fuss style is pure classic.
I'm actually not a bag junkie (gasp). I do believe in investing in key handbags and generally choose a few classic bags for each season - with the need to upgrade my current white bag this Bulga piece is an attractive option. Bulga's classic white bag packs a fistful of wow factor and durabilty.

Report Signature Gala in Natural $187.
Report Signature is a line of designer footwear that mixes the playful, ready-to-wear sensibility of its sister line, Report, with a more haute couture design aspect.
What more can I say? Anyone who knows me - knows that these shoes "had me at hello"! The snakeskin, stacked heel, and peep toe??? Well there just isn't anything else to say about these marvelous makes!

Rory Beca Wrap Top in Yellow Cheetah $297
From vintage lace to printed silks, designer Rory Edelman scours vintage shows, private collections and antique shops all over the world that inspire the timeless detailing and fabrics seen in the Rory Beca collections.
Love, love, love! It seems like everytime I tell myself that I will not buy one more animal print - something like this shows up - and gasp I have to take a hard swallow and say "Alas, this will be my last animal print piece..." (Oh, but they're just so much fun...)

Harkham Silk Chiffon Bow Top in Black $206
Designer Darena Yee gets her inspiration from fleeting images-- her collection is designed with a feminine, vintage edge. Extravagant laces, cotton voiles, engrossing prints, and whispery silks add a serene sense of beauty to this collection.
The chicness of black after all these years still can not be defied. Harkhams silk top breeds romance and rock with this edgy yet romantic silk top.

Erato V-Neck Printed Dress with Sequence in Black $264
Erato is a Greek Muse-- the name means "lovely" if derived from Eros, and the fashion collection we derive from it is nothing less than mythological beauty.
Okay, it's true. I just can't resist a vintage inspired piece and there is and has always been something about the perfect combination of black white and yellow that just gives me chills of excitement!

“I want women to really look like women from today..."

“I want women to really look like women from today. It's not from the past and not from the future, because I don't know what happens in the future. It is the women of today (who) I think is a seductive woman.”

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera: A Revolutionary On Her Own Right

By: Boyd Davis Photo below: Carolina Herrera on the runway, Fall 2007. Photo by Giovanni Pucci
DALLAS, Apr 17, 2001/ FW/ Socialite turned designer, Carolina Herrera designs for her crowd. Prior to becoming a fashion designer, she was on the International Best Dressed List for a decade. With her inherent taste and personal style, Carolina Herrera fuses it on her creations. The Carolina Herrera woman is feminine, at ease with herself and elegant.

Born in Venezuela (1939), Carolina Herrera symbolized the South American upperclass - a wealthy husband, 4 children and a member of the jetset. Her "late-blooming" fashion career was a result of her stature in life, national culture and her generation's definition of what a woman's role should be. She had to be a wife and mother first before anything else. When her children were grown and relieved of the responsibility of motherhood, becoming a fashion designer was a natural course of action for her. In fact, it could be said that it was a natural evolution of her talent and taste.

She launched her first couture collection in 1981, introduced her fur collection in 1984, and her CH collections (more affordable Carolina Herrera line) in 1986. Her bridal line was launched in 1987 after she designed Caroline Kennedy's wedding gown and her perfume lines followed in 1988. She had also expanded her lines to include menswear and jewelry.

Carolina Herrera's decision to launch a fashion career was a path less travelled by women of her stature in her native Venezuela. In fact, it is almost revolutionary, considering the very conservative view of the Venezuela's upper class. Carolina Herrera is part of the upper class who do not "work." A fashion designer is a "job" not a station in life. And considering the generation she is from, it was a courageous step.

Carolina Herrera should be hailed for both her contribution to fashion and her contribution to woman's liberation which she did her way!

Style & Image: A Calling Card Carrying Member of the Club

As a style maven it is important to promote yourself. You need standout business cards and matching stationary to remind people of your fabulous style even when you're not around. Splurge for special paper - the thicker or more colorful the better. Keep the fonts and design consistent so people will automatically associate it with - or anything like it - with you. Hand them out to everyone you meet from your manicurist to the hostess at your favorite restaurant to the Nordstrom sale associate.

Your card should include the following:
- Your name or whatever you answer to at the moment
- Your address. Unless your the Holly GoLlighty type, which in this cas you can use something whimsical like "traveling"
- Fax, cell, and/or mobile. Skype and AOL ids work well too.
- Watermark, logo, or some king of symbol that represents you .

Fashion Theory: Springs Building Blocks

Spring is perhaps the most important time of the year for shopping. The onset of Spring and warmer climates (particulary if you live in a 4 climate region as I do) comes often with a great sense of anticipation. This onset of anticipation is usually acccompanied by a certain sense of motivation which inspires one to purge old items and explore the new. I know a few people who relent on spring shoppping as they feel it is simply more of the same - with little room for trend and/or new design - particulary the latter. Spring is often a time when retailers and designers alike focus on basics and wardrobe staples. Less attention is paid to trend and more attention is paid to improving the tried and true. Spring is often a time when designers will declare the "it" color of the season or if you dare "the new black". It may seem a little early to be concentrating on your Spring wardrobe (especially if your winter climate is construed of frigid temperatures), however given Springs bounty of pulse-beating basics, the added perusal time is to ones advantage. Spring is an imperial time for accessing your current wardrobe, stocking up on basics, retooling, updating or replacing style staples and alas getting a jumpstart on a few of the upcoming Spring trends.

Here's a few key guidelines for updating your Spring wardrobe:

Know the Classics:

Okay, we need to regroup here. Have you ever seen someone maybe in your office, school, or wherever you spend most of your daily life, out of nowhere get a brand new wardrobe. The dramatic change is clear and you can pretty much tell that this person went on a shopping spree or binge and now has a "new look" so to speak. You may even be able to identify the designer or the retailer in which the macro of items were purchased. Perhaps it's Calvin Klein's new line or Club Monaco. No matter how desperately this fashion frenzy was needed you must admit this approach is pretty lame and doesn't exactly constitute a style maven. I mean it's pretty easy and predictable to just waltz into the nearest J Crew and shop the Spring line. Be careful not to confuse stylish clothing with stylish people. Stylish clothing is everywhere and now thanks to top designers such as Vera Wang heading to discount department store like Kohl's stylish clothing is more accessible than ever. To actually possess style is the art of incorporating important pieces into your wardrobe which keep your entire wardrobe looking fresh and new each day.

The Audrey Hepburn classic, Breakfast at Tiffany's continues to enchant us more than forty years later. It's still one of my all-time favorite "pick me up" movies. A big part of the films allure has to do with Audrey's classic wardrobe. The two chic black dresses, the belted trench, kitten heels... These clothes all look incredibly stylish today due to Givenchy's attention to clean lines and Audrey's effortless style and grace. Givenchy's message of simplicity is the reason why time and time again this simple and chic classic look endures.

Classics are timeless and seasonless. Trends are on borrowed time and have low season to season survival rate. Chasing trend is not only exhausting and expensive, but the payoff - a fleeting moment of hipness followed by a fleeting feeling of haplessness - is not fun. That isn't to say that trendy items don't have their place in the wardrobe of a well-dressed woman. But they should be used in a sparingly fashion, so they complement a wardrobe of your favorite classics without overwhelming them.

The Trench Coat
I know it's been said 1,000 and 12 times but seriously, "it's time you get a trench..." and "... it's time you get a good one". In fact, I'll up the ante on that and suggest 2; one in a neutral shade, such as black, white, navy, camel, or grey and one in one of this seasons fantastic brights - my favorites for this season are canary yellow, kelly green, and crayola blue. If you're a little reluctant on the mileage you may get out of the yellow or green, the safest bet for color is red, which is a bright color that tends to be more classical than whimsical.

The Skirt
Style: Pencil, A-line, Flat front, Knee Length
Colors: Neutrals - Don't recommend any brights here. Go for black, khaki, grey, brown, and white.
Avoid: Boxy styles, Stiff fabrics, pleats, wrap styles, horizontal or zany patterns.

Pumps, Kitten Heels, and Ballet Flats.
Colors: Bright pumps are actually becoming quite the stylish staple, so you can have a bit of fun in this area. Go for classic shape, but feel free to buy that red or purple pump you've been eyeing up.
Avoid: It's really difficult for me to tell someone to avoid any kind of shoe. I truly believe there is a time and place for just about every shoe - particulaty if we are discussing high heels. The most supportive advice I can give in this regard is first stock up on your basics and then feel free to go on you emotional shoe buying brigade.

Cashmere:
"The cashmere sweater will always get the upgrade to first class before the jogging suit!"
Five resasons to believe in cashmere.
1. It's timeless.
2. It's cozy.
3. It's elegant and expensive.
4. From scoopneck, to v-neck, to t-neck, to cardigan there is a style for every shape.
5. Oh and did I mention, "The cashmere sweater will always get the upgrade to first class before the jogging suit!" Cashmere is contagious!

Jeans:
The topic of jeans can be discussed so extensively that I wil no doubt have to leave that a topic for a latter date. However for the time being I leave you with this advice: go shopping for that perfect pair of jeans - and once you find them buy two pairs.

Other important classics:
Fitted cotton shirt
Semi-fitted suit (3 pieces - blazer, pant, and skirt)
Leggings and/or hosiery
Lingerie

Add Fun to Function: Revitalize the classics by adding
Waist Belts - This style trend is going nowhere!
Long Gloves
Jewelry - Classics and Funky
Bright Patterned Scarves
Bright Handbags
and Shoes!

Don't be scared to:
Mix swimwear with daywear (seriously).
Mix lingerie with eveningwear.
Change the buttons or hemming on that classic black trench that you want to spice up.
Don't be afraid to "be your own Audrey" impose your take on the classics - and project a personal sense of style and stability.

Fashion Tip:
Work one trend at a time.
For example: If you do a bright color chose a basic shape.
If you're doing a different shape choose a neutral color.

Fashion Theory: The Cost Per Wear Concept

Classic clothing is classic because it can be worn for years without it looking dated. That makes it a great value - if you get pieces that are built to last. To do so, you'll have to spend a little extra to buy the highest quality you can afford. While this can be justified in the abstract, it's harder to stomach when looking at a price tag. So calm down by remembering that with well made classics unlike trendy items, the cost per wear is much lower - the more you wear something the less expensive it becomes.

The CPW = P= price of the item, D = number 0f days worn each month, M - number of months worn per year = Annual CPW

Example: The cost per wear of a coat which was purchased at $600 that you plan on wearing 4 times a week for 3 months would be $50.00. If you plan to wear this coat two years in a row the CPW becomes lower at$50.00/2 year = $25.00 cost per wear.

Item on sale? Even better. An adjusted formula can be used to calculate the value per wear.

The VPW = V = retail value of item, D = nomber o days worn each month, M = number of month of worn per year = Annual VPW

Example? The value per wear of a handbag which was originally priced at $1200 yet purchased on sale at $900 that you plan on carrying 5 times a week for 4 months would be $60.00. The CPW for this site would be $45.00. If you compare the VPW/CPW you are actually realizing a value over cost of $15 every time you carry this bag! This is called an investment piece!

The Cost-Per-Wear Theory at Work:

Louis Vuitton

From Runway to Reality: Russian Fetish Maison Martin Margiela Now Available Online

Runway Review:
PARIS, October 1, 2007 – Something sexy this way comes: bodies, bandeau tubes, tight graphic stripes. As a take on body-con and the smooth, attenuated silhouette, Margiela's was one of the sharpest and least retro versions on offer. His revisionist working of the possibilities of cling-fit stretch created a whole new look, but how to describe it? Put together from abbreviated, horizontally banded beige and black body pieces, it was part swim, part foundation garment, with matched armbands and the occasional trompe l'oeil bicolored stocking-legging added to give total coverage.Later on, Margiela introduced a clever way of layering fluidity into the picture, making flyaway, cutaway pieces to shrug over shoulders, or skirts that were short in front and long in back (or vice versa)—a modernist underground alternative to the floaty chiffonery that's surfaced in the mainstream. That segued into a passage of "vestigial" accessories—a couple of dresses with shoulder bags hilariously implanted at the armpit, and 3-D fabric buckles standing in place of belts. That train of thought—the "ghosts" of garments—also led Margiela to shred denim to become fringed pelmets or ultra-tattered jeans under jackets with vast, pointy shoulders. Was this a convergence with the rising interest in Americana that's bubbling up in so many other collections? Probably, yes: For evening, there were reinterpretations of a "found" fantasy Western photo-print T-shirt, made into bustier dresses. In all, there was plenty to think about from one of the most innovative designers in Paris.– Sarah Mower

Can South Beach Stay Chic? Mid-South Beach Still Top Hot Spot

Having sufferend the past flashing lights of Miami to nauseating degrees. I have yet, another group of girlfriends who are craving for that steamy South Beach air. Albeit, I don't have the heart to deny Miami's charm entirely, however when you have in fact attended the South Beach region to somewhat exhausting levels, the ideal of another South Beach holiday becomes a liittle mundane. Alas, I took a little time out to do some legwork to find just what is "poppin" in Miami these days. Much to my delight it seems that the Mid-South Beach region is pushing it up another echelon and vying for the official Miam HotSpot. In fact, Mid-South Beach Miami was the only place in the US, with the exception of Death Valley, to make top ten of The New York Times 53 Places To Go This Year list.

Here's a few reasons why:

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary Hotel & Spa is the ultimate getaway Boutique hotel, where lifestyle connoisseurs are pampered in a relaxing Zen-like environment. The Sanctuary is located right in the marvellous South Beach, with its hectic and hedonistic nightlife, endless sunshine and exclusive shopping. This ultra chic hotel offers a place to get refuge, and has rapidly come the place of choice for people who see Miami as "a second home", as well as the young and famous.

With 30 suites, the overall emphasis is on privacy and seclusion, contrasting favourably with the high-rise ethos that predominates in the area. All of the luxurious suites overlook a secluded Japanese garden style interior courtyard and are bordered by a terrace with sliding glass doors, inviting plenty of South Beach sunlight. They also have fully equipped kitchens with 'Nespresso' coffee makers. The sumptuous Ola restaurant has become a Miami hotspot that offers a gastronomic adventure beginning with a specialty mojito, followed by a signature dish such as goats cheese and black pepper empanadas, "Oysters Rodriguez" or crackling crispy pork. A blend of flavours from the Carribean and Latin America that ignite the taste buds. Ola's decadent deserts are on a world of their own, churros with Venezuelan chocolate sauce is just one example. To complete the experience guests can finish with a hand-rolled Dominican cigar.Spa treatments include tangerine bath and scrub and revitalizing scalp treatments, perfect for preparing for a big night on the town. The Spa services can be enjoyed from the privacy of a guest suite, or the rooftop pool.

The Sanctuary Hotel & Spa is located in the South Beach area which is known as a vibrant party scene with a tropical setting. Apart from the beautiful beach there's Lincoln Road Mall which is considered to be one of the hottest shopping streets in the US. South Beach is also home to some of the best golf clubs, such as Miami Beach Golf Club. The Art Deco district is also another interesting attraction in the area.

The Setai

The Setai Hotel is an intimate Art Deco oceanfront resort in the heart of South Beach, set amid tropical gardens and sparkling pools. Featuring a façade of glass and aluminium, The Setai introduces to the vibrant and popular zone of South Beach the Asian traditions of simplicity and elegance. This oasis of pools and gardens is linked together with a pathway that leads to the hotel's private beach.

This resort has been established with luxury and quality firmly in mind. Bearing the unmistakable imprint of legendary hotelier Adrian Zecha, guests can revel in the exclusive characteristics of the oversized suites, from bathroom Jacuzzis to panoramic city views as well as an in-suite Spa room. If that weren't enough, the establishment includes numerous restaurants and bars, as well as a wonderful private Spa and three swimming pools.

The Setai is located on Collins Ave at 20th street near Miami Beach's thriving cultural district, as well as the nightlife, fine dining, shopping and other South Beach attractions.

Townhouse Hotel

Conceived as a fresh, fun and fashionable retreat, the Townhouse Hotel offers a playful combination of modern design and old-fashioned comfort, only steps away from the ocean in Miami's South Beach. The Townhouse provides guests with a sleek and sexy hideaway for a weekend getaway or a long retreat. Built in 1939, the 69-room five-story building has been creatively redefined by young Paris-based designer India Mahdavi, whose minimalist furnishings provide maximum relaxation and leisure. The hallways have been re-invented with equal creativity, serving as hangout environments soundtracked in stereo, stocked with benches, newspapers, and comics.

The guest rooms offer another fun, unique take on relaxation, utilizing a minimum of furniture for maximum leisure. Oversized baby blue pillows adorn each bed, complementing giant round poufs and rugs in scarlet and blue. L-shaped couches could double as crash pads for overnight guests. Flowered cardinal red sexy lampshades match old-time fire engine red telephones that mix art deco with modern technology. The outdoor rooftop terrace features king-size waterbeds paired with huge umbrellas for sunbathers and shade-seekers alike. At night the rooftop transforms into one of South Beach’s hottest social scenes."BondSt Lounge", Miami’s outpost of the famed New York sushi restaurant, is located on the ground floor and is known for its intimate, casual atmosphere and its award-winning menu.

Located at the north end of the art deco district in Miami Beach, Florida. The Townhouse Hotel Miami is beside The Bass Museum Of Art. The beach is just a half block away.

In addition to the great hotels featured above. 2008 is slated to be an exciting year for Mid-South Beach Miam. This year fellow Mid-Beach iconic hotels Eden Roc Resort and Fountainebleau Miami Beach will reopen in 2008 after multi million-dollar renovations. South Beach will also welcome a boite of glamourous red carpet designer hotels: the Angler's Boutique Resort by Gianni Versace's former decorator (Wallace Tutt); the Tides South Beach, which is being revamped and the Mondrian South, which is also being renovated. I think it's time to plan another Miami Beach soiree!

Modern Opulance: OPI's Russian Collection

One of this years best fashion accessories is a perfect manicure! OPI has been producing some of the most up-to-date fashion forward colors since 1981 and this year is no exception! My personal favorite is Siberian Nights! Check out the press release below regarding OPI's new Russian Collection. Also, be sure to visit the OPI studio to try on this seasons latest nail colors!

Modern Opulance: OPI's Russian Collection

Modern opulence. An easy, assumed elegance, a sense of grace, and an instinct for the finer things in life. A love of luxury and a taste for refined style. And the focus of fashion and beauty trends for Fall/Winter 2007 – beautifully translated into the Russian Collection by OPI.

This fall’s fashion runways were filled with sophisticated, grown-up style, influenced by looks of the 1920s - 1940s, with a polished, aristocratic overtone. Simple lines and luxurious fabrics – think cashmere, satin, velvet – stole the shows, with “architectural beauty” an important buzzword.Russian Collection shades: Vodka & Caviar (vivid crimson); An Affair in Red Square (shimmering red).

Look for shades of brown, dark plum, grey, deep green, indigo, red, and black worked into beautifully tailored, ladylike shapes in suits and trousers.--> Slim skirts and fitted dresses, often seen with looser coats and cardigans, are big this season, as is the ever-classic little black dress, now swingy and sequined. Russian Collection shades: Catherine the Grape (royal wine); Siberian Nights (inky onyx); Russian Navy (deep indigo); Boris & Natasha (rich raisin).

Evening wear dazzles with strapless dresses in velvet, cocktail dresses in floaty chiffons and satins, and paillettes, crystals, and jeweled medallions as embellishments. Metallics remain an essential look.Russian Collection shades: Midnight in Moscow (charcoal with maroon glints); Cosmo-Not Tonight Honey! (pale gold); Ruble for Your Thoughts (glimmering copper).
In accessories, you’ll see vintage footwear, including pumps and granny boots, as well as handbags with jeweled closures, and long gloves. Fur (real or faux) was seen on cuffs, hemlines, Russian-style hats, and coats (even worn with jeans).

Beauty this season complements the modern opulence theme. The runways featured smoky eyes done in black and brown, sometimes with a touch of red for drama; coppery golds and bronzes will also be big. Hair was smooth and sleek in elegant chignons. Colors for lips are eitherluxuriously dark or neutral.Russian Collection shades: St. Petersburgundy (lush claret); Krème de la Kremlin (terra cotta rose); Suzi Says Da! (dark chocolate).

The colors of the Russian Collection by OPI capture the trends of the season perfectly. Inspired by the aristocratic elegance of Russia’s past – an elegance passed down through generations – these colors are sumptuous, sophisticated, modern. And yes, opulent.

Look to the colors of the RUSSIAN Collection by OPI to complement this fall’s fashion and beauty with timeless style!

What I Just Bought: Adding Mileage to the Winter Wardrobe

I love this time of year! The holiday shopping is done. We embark on a fresh new year! The spring lines hit the department stores and boutiques and all the winter gear gets marked down anywhere between 40%-75% off! To celebrate the reduced prices and the new year, I decided to give my winter wardrobe a few finishing touches before I begin to acquire my Spring wardrobe. Take a look at what I picked up!

Juicy Couture Footwear
Evie Gold Ring Flat $225
Glamorous flats make any ensemble feel a little fancy.Patent leather flat with linked ring detail at vamp and perforated heart detail throughout. 1/4" metallic-covered heel. Embossed 'Smells Like Couture' lettering at metallic-leather sole. Dust bag included.Made in Italy.

This is a revolution for me because one of my New Years resolutions was to actually stop wearing heels so much! I've been practically living in stilettos since my 18th birthday and since than I can't even tell you how many stories I've heard from older women who "remember when they could wear those heels!" I had previously purchased the Tory Burch ballet flats, but found them a little uncomfortable to wear as they forced my foot to be completely flat. These actually have a little bit of a heel which is nice since I think my foot has a permanent arch from all the heels I've worn!

Frye
Liv Buckled Hidden Platform Pump $188
Sexy in that downtown-cool way we love.Leather pump with D-ring buckle at vamp and buckle detail behind heel. 3/4" hidden platform and 4.5" covered heel. Rubber patch at leather sole.

Again I've done another favor for my feet. The sturdy heel packs more ankle support and the forgiving round toe allows good wiggle room. I love the orange lining and stacked heel. These are all grown-up yet sexy instead of maternal.

Botkier
Sasha Small Duffel $635
We love a glamorous bag, but a glamorous bag that's practical, too? Now that's just brilliant.Leather handbag with flap pocket at front and metallic strap detail at front and back. Ruching at sides. Rolled double handles and detachable shoulder strap. 19" main compartment zipper. Lined interior features 7" zipper pocket and 2 patch pockets. Dust bag included.13"H x 17"L x 5"D.5" strap drop.Imported.

I am probably one of the most picky people around when it comes to finding a handbag. I truly do believe in ponying up and spending the loot on a good bag however everything about it has to be right. It has to have the look, the color, and the functionality. It also has to have a real style appeal to it that doesn't easily bore me, since I tend to carry my handbags from anywhere from 4-6 months. I already have this Botkier in black and love it so much I figured the gray bag would be a nice transition from Winter to Spring.

Mint Jodi Arnold
Button Back Ponte Dress $396 SALE $198
Available exclusively at shopbop.com.Exclusive, adorable, and a dash of shine. We couldn't possibly desire anything more.Soft, heavy-jersey dress with crystal detail and satin banding at neck. 7 button closure at back. Pleating at cuffs. 3/4 sleeves.32" long.Shell: 69% rayon/24% nylon/7% polyurethane.Trim: 51% viscose/49% spun rayon.Dry clean.Imported.For more info about our exclusives, click here.

Lately, I can't seem to go on a shopping escapade without picking up a new dress. I debated for a while between the black and the ivory on this piece but at long last choose the ivory as I thought again it would make a nice transition into the Spring. I also opted to go a size smaller, from the 6 to the 4, so the dress would be a little shorter and pair well under jeans or leggings. At 50% off this item was a steal!

Sunner
Calgary Ruffle Coat $524 SALE $262
The perfect coat makes cold weather so much more bearable.Double-breasted, felt coat with 4-button closure and ruffle trim at front and double hook-and-eye closure at neck. Flap pockets at hip. Long sleeves. Lined bodice.36" long.Body: 70% wool/20% nylon/10% cashmere.Lining: 100% acetate.Dry clean.Made in the U.S.A.

So you already went out and purchased the jacket you just had to have this season. Now it's time to go find the coat you saw after you purchased that jacket and even better -- catch it on sale. This purchase really requires no explanation. It's a new take on a classic and in a neutral color and at a fantastic savings, it earns the title as the sound "Deal of the Week".

Happy Shopping!

"...that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean."

Miranda Priestly: [Miranda and some assistants are deciding between two similar belts for an outfit. Andy sniggers because she thinks they look exactly the same] Something funny?

Andy Sachs: No, no, nothing. Y'know, it's just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. Y'know, I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Miranda Priestly: This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

The Devil Wears Prada is an Academy Award-nominated 2006 comedy-drama film, a loose screen adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name. It stars Anne Hathaway as Andrea "Andy" Sachs, a recent college graduate who comes to New York City and gets a job as a co-assistant to powerful and demanding fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci co-star, with Adrian Grenier, Simon Baker and Tracie Thoms playing key supporting roles. Wendy Finerman produced and David Frankel directed; the film was distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Streep's performance drew rave reviews from critics and later earned her many award nominations, including her record-setting 14th Oscar bid, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Blunt also drew favorable notice and nominations, as did many of those involved in the film's production. While critical reaction to the film as a whole was more measured, it received generally favorable notice and became a surprise summer box-office hit following its June 30 North American release. The commercial success and critical praise for Streep continued in foreign markets, and it led the international box office for most of October. The U.S. DVD release likewise was the top rental during December. Ultimately, it would gross over $300 million, mostly from its international run, and finish in 2006's top 20 both in the U.S. and overseas. It was also the highest-grossing film ever in Streep's and Hathaway's careers. A television series is being developed.

Although the movie is set in the fashion world, most designers and other fashion notables avoided appearing as themselves for fear of arousing the wrath of powerful U.S. Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is widely believed to have been the inspiration for Priestly. Many designers did, however, allow their clothes and accessories to be used in the film, making it the most expensively-costumed film in history.[2] Wintour later overcame her initial skepticism,[3] saying she liked the film and Streep in particular.

Style Staples: The Little Black Dress (LBD)

A little black dress is an evening or cocktail dress, cut simply and often with a short skirt, originally made popular in the 1920s by the fashion designer Coco Chanel. Intended by Chanel to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color, its continued ubiquity is such that many refer to it by its abbreviation, LBD.

The "little black dress" is considered essential to a complete wardrobe by many women and fashion observers, who believe it a "rule of fashion" that every woman should own a simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion: for example, worn with a jacket and pumps for daytime businesswear or with more ornate jewelry and accessories for evening. Because it is meant to be a staple of the wardrobe for a number of years, the style of the little black dress ideally should as simple as possible: a short black dress that is too clearly part of a trend would not qualify because it would soon appear dated.

History
Prior to the 1920s, black was reserved for periods of mourning and considered indecent when worn outside such circumstances, such as depicted in John Singer Sargent's painting the Madame X. A widow's mourning dress was closely observed at a time when details in fashion conveyed a sophisticated symbolic language. During the Victorian and Edwardian ages, a widow was expected to wear several stages of mourning dress for at least two years. “Deep” or “full” mourning required the woman to wear plain black clothing with absolutely no decoration for the first year and a day of mourning. The second stage lasted nine months and permitted the wearing of black silk. In “ordinary mourning” for three months, the widow could accessorize only with black ribbon, lace, embroidery, or jet jewelry. The final six months of “half-mourning” allowed the bereaved to wear muted or neutral colors: shades and tints of purple were most common.

In 1926 Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel published a picture of a short, simple black dress in Vogue. It was calf-length, straight, and decorated only by a few diagonal lines. Vogue called it “Chanel’s Ford.” Like the Model T, the little black dress was simple and accessible for women of all social classes. Vogue also said that the LBD would become “a sort of uniform for all women of taste.”

The little black dress continued to be popular through the Depression era predominantly through its economy and elegance, albeit with the line lengthened somewhat. Hollywood's influence on fashion in North America helped the little black dress' popularity, but for more practical reasons: as Technicolor movies became more common, filmmakers relied on little black dresses because other colors looked distorted on screen and botched the coloring process. During World War II, the style continued in part due to widespread rationing of textiles and in part as a common uniform (accessorized for businesswear) for civilian women entering the workforce.

The rise of Dior's "New Look" in the post-war era and the sexual repression of the 1950s returned the little black dress to its roots as a uniform and a symbol of the dangerous woman. Hollywood femme fatales and fallen women characters were portrayed often in black halter-style dresses in contrast to the more conservative dresses of housewives or more wholesome Hollywood stars. Synthetic fibers made popular in the 1940s and 1950s broadened the availability and affordability of many designs and so were loved by dressmakers and ordinary women alike.

The generation gap of the 1960s created a dichotomy in the design of the little black dress. The younger "mod" generation preferred, in general, a miniskirt on their versions of the dress and designers catering to the youth culture continued to push the envelope - shortening the skirt even more, creating cutouts or slits in the skirt or bodice of the dress, using sheer fabrics such as netting or tulle. Many other women in the 1960s aspired to simple black sheath dresses similar to that designed by Hubert de Givenchy and worn by actress Audrey Hepburn in the film "Breakfast At Tiffany's".

The 1970s did see some little black dresses. Some were lacy and feminine, some, like Bill Blass’ were simple and normal. Others, like the one Qiana’s one-shoulder form-fitting little black dress, were skimpier. However, colors rather than black were preferred for women's fashion, especially for the disco or jet set.

The popularity of casual fabrics, especially knits, for dress and business wear during the 1980s brought the little black dress back into vogue. Coupled with the fitness craze, the new designs incorporated details already popular at the time such as broad shoulders or peplums: later in the decade and into the 1990s simpler designs in a variety of lengths and fullnesses were popular. The grunge culture of the 1990s saw the combination of the little black dress with both sandals and combat boots, though the dress itself remained simple in cut and fabric. The new glamour of the late 1990s and into the 21st century have led to new variations of the dress but, like the 1970s, color has re-emerged as a factor in fashion and formalwear again shows an aversion against black.

Famous Little Black Dresses
Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s epitomized the Chanel ideal for wearing little black dresses, accessorized with pearls, as was frequently seen throughout the early 1960s.
Betty Boop, a cartoon character based in part on the 1920s' "It Girl" Clara Bow, was drawn wearing a little black dress in her early films, though with Technocolor Betty's dress became red.
Wallis Warfield Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, was known to own several little black dresses and said much in praise of the garments. One quote of the Duchess: “When a little black dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place.”
Edith Piaf, the French folk icon, performed in a black sheath dress throughout her career: for this habit she was nicknamed “little black sparrow.” It was thought that the dress helped audiences focus more on Piaf's singing and less on her appearance.
