Fashion Icon: Rihanna

2007 was definitely a great year for Rihanna. She's created her own image, and in the process become a fashion inspiration to the masses. Rihanna caps off her successful year by covering the January 2008 issue of Allure Magazine. In the mag, Rihanna dishes on a range of topics including her rumored fling with actor Josh Hartnett.

“This is what really happened. He and my management, they have each other’s contact information. I went to [the club] Pink Elephant, and he came by. All of a sudden, the next day I’m seeing that we were kissing and hugging up each other. You can’t even go out with a friend who’s a celebrity and have a good time without people making shit up…well, at least he’s good-looking, right?”She even talks about her label's reaction to her trendsetting decision to cut her hair into her now infamous bob.

“The label didn’t want me to do this look. But cutting my hair, it made me stand out as an artist. I don’t care who likes it — this is me. My friends still live in Barbados, and they let me know that everyone asks for the ‘Rihanna haircut.”I can't wait to see where Rihanna's style is gonna go in 2008.

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only..."

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

Coco Chanel, (French Fashion designer who ruled over Parisian haute couture for almost six decades, 1883-1971)

Coco Chanel
(Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel) (
August 19, 1883 - January 10, 1971)

From her first millinery shop, opened in 1912, to the 1920s, Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel rose to become one of the premier fashion designers in Paris, France. Replacing the corset with comfort and casual elegance, her fashion themes included simple suits and dresses, women's trousers, costume jewelry, perfume and textiles.

She claimed a birthdate of 1893 and a birthplace of Auvergne; she was actually born in 1883 in Saumur - her mother worked in the poorhouse where Gabrielle was born, and died when Gabrielle was only six, leaving her father with five children whom he promptly abandoned to the care of relatives.

She adopted the name Coco during a brief career as a cafe and concert singers 1905-1908. First a mistress of a wealthy military officer then of an English industrialist, she drew on the resources of these patrons in setting up a millinery shop in Paris in 1910, expanding to Deauville and Biarritz. The two men also helped her find customers among women of society, and her simple hats became popular.

Soon she was expanding to couture, working in jersey, a first in the French fashion world. By the 1920s, her fashion house had expanded considerably, and her chemise set a fashion trend with its "little boy" look. Her relaxed fashions, short skirts, and casual look were in sharp contrast to the corset fashions popular in the previous decades. Chanel herself dressed in mannish clothes, and adapted these more comfortable fashions which other women also found liberating.

In 1922 Chanel introduced a perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became and remained popular, and remains a profitable product of Chanel's company. Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business in 1924, and perhaps also her lover. Wertheimer owned 70% of the company; Coco Chanel received 10% and her friend Bader 20%. The Wertheimers continue to control the perfume company today.

Coco Chanel introduced her signature cardigan jacket in 1925 and signature "little black dress" in 1926. Most of her fashions had a staying power, and didn't change much from year to year -- or even generation to generation.

She briefly served as a nurse in World War I. Nazi occupation meant the fashion business in Paris was cut off for some years; Chanel's affair during World War II with a Nazi officer also resulted in some years of diminished popularity and an exile of sorts to Switzerland. In 1954 her comeback restored her to the first ranks of haute couture. Her natural, casual clothing including the Chanel suit once again caught the eye -- and purses -- of women. She introduced pea jackets and bell bottom pants for women. She was still working in 1971 when she died. Karl Lagerfeld has been chief designer of Chanel's fashion house since 1983.

In addition to her work with high fashion, she also designed stage costumes for such plays as Cocteau's Antigone (1923) and Oedipus Rex (1937) and film costumes for several movies, including Renoir's La Regle de Jeu. Katharine Hepburn starred in the 1969 Broadway musical Coco based on the life of Coco Chanel.

Chaos Out of The Closet...

You've heard it before, "Clutter is stuck energy that keeps you stuck in undesirable life patterns." Therefore, you can "sort out your life" by sorting out your junk. More than just junk, clutter is all those things that have negative symbology and that collect stagnant energy. This latter can also apply to bodily, emotional, and spiritual clutter. Here's some fresh tips for de-cluttering your closet.

How To Clean Out Your Closet

1. Get three boxes and mark them 'Keep,' 'Donate' 'Dump' and 'Fix'.

2. Evaluate each item you remove from the closet. Classify each items as follows:

  • Keep
Start with jackets, suits, and separates. Keep your essentials, the clothes that make you feel good, the clothes that have worked for you over and over--as long as they're in good condition, still fit, and don't look dated.

  • Donate
If you're the same size and haven't worn something in a year or more (some recommend two years), plan to give it away--unless it's evening wear. An evening outfit or separates that look and feel great can be worn for years.

  • Dump
Throw out clothes that aren't fit to donate (c'mon, you know they're in there!) Keep a few things for dirty jobs like gardening, painting, and store them with your tools. Unless you keep your tools in the garage, because then you'll never wear them because you'll be afraid they're full of spiders or something.

  • Fix
Put anything that needs a hem, button, alteration, or cleaning into this box. Once everything else is organized, come back to this box and get to work. For things you can't fix yourself, go to the dry cleaner or tailor (every woman needs a good tailor--if you don't have one, ask your friends and acquaintances for recommendations). Make sure this box is empty by the end of the day, even if you've just put the things in your car to take to the designated repair person. One more caveat--make sure you really want to keep the things you're fixing--or you're just wasting money.

  • Maybe
This box is for the shirt you got on sale but never wore because you don't have anything to go with it, or just never bothered to figure out what to wear with it, the pants that are a little too tight, etc. At the end of the day, seal this box and put it somewhere else, away from your closet. Anything you don't miss after four months should be given away.

3. Once you've completed these steps, look over your keepers again and see how they coordinate with one another. If one piece doesn't fit with anything else, donate it. (Shopping to find things to go with it will recreate the problem you just finished solving--your wardrobe should be a coherent, cohesive unit. It's great to have pieces that express different aspects of your personality, but they still should all fit!).

4. Now make a list of things you need, like a new shell for a favorite suit, or a new white shirt to replace the four with yellowing you just got rid of. Put the keepers back in your closet and revel in all your new space--and in being able to see your clothes. And enjoy getting dressed the next day; it'll be so much easier and faster...and now you get to go shopping!

Holiday Hangover Recovery

Sure, you've heard them before, but isn't it nice to be reminded what really works...and why?

GO BACK TO BED You've drank hard, you deserve a good rest. Especially good if you can find someone to wait on your every need.

WATER, WAITER. Your body might have been 90% water before you went out but it feels like 20% now. Get your dried up prune body over to the tap and drink, drink, drink. Drink 'til you stomach's so full it hurts, then wait. 5 minutes later your mouth will be parch dry again and ready for more. Two minutes if you smoked ciggies.

PAPILION STYLE We like Papilion's style. He says "lots of fresh home made orange juice (usually 3 oranges and 1 lemon) then a nice long shower and then lots of sex :)"

PLAY IN THE HAY When you've tried all else (better still, before) settle down to a good old fashioned romp. The exercise pumps your blood, the rest, well you know what that does. And at the end you can down a big drink of water and slip back into a peaceful slumber. Ahhhh...

DRINK SPORTS CORDIAL You know, like Gatorade and Powerade and probably Staminade too. You wee'd out all your body salts, so you'll be needing some more. Naturally, the liquid refreshment will do you good too.

GET A SUGAR HIT Get like a kid on red cordial and pump yourself up. See, your body needs sugar to break down alcohol which means right now it hasn't got any. Which is why you're feeling weak and lightheaded. Mars Bars are good...they only take 15 minutes to start giving you a sugar hit. Jellybeans will get you bouncing too, especially the glucose ones you get from the chemist. And they won't make you as fat.

THE GRAVITY CURE If you feel gravity tugging, let it win for a while. Find a warm, flat floor on which to settle your bones. It'll open your lungs and slow the pounding in your head. Feel free to fall asleep.

DON'T MIX YOUR DRINKS Don't mix your drinks, don't mix your drinks, don't mix your drinks. Unless one of them's water.

WET DREAMS Before you go out put a glass of water next to your bed. Then drink it and put another one there for when you get home. Works best if you know where you'll be sleeping.

KEEP DRINKING You've heard it before but guess what? It works. See alcohol contains ethanol and methanol. Methanol makes your head sore, ethanol stops it working its evil magic. New drink = new ethanol = delayed pain. And more fun now.

The Festive Coke
Fill w. Coke (or Diet Coke)
1/2 oz Grand Marnier Float
Maraschino Cherry Garnish

Holiday Sangria - My personal sangria recipe which consistently steers rave reviews! Hey, what can I say 'tis the season for giving!
Red Table Wine 1 bottle (Recommend Spanish red wine - Protocolo or Borsoa - also can try a Cabernet and/or Shiraz cuvee; Beaoujolais could work well too. Keep it inexpensive - less than $13/ml and light and fruity)
Cranberry Juice 8 ounces (go for the good stuff - all natural - no cocktails)
Orange Juice 2 ounces (again - good stuff...)
Grand Marnier 1 ounce
Bacardi "O" or Bacardi Dark Rum 1 ounce
Sugar - 1/2 cup (Prefer Sugar in the Raw? - use double the amount per serving; I don't recommend using Splenda, Equal or any other sugar substitute as the taste will be "off")
Citrus Fruits (Garnish with as many citrus fruits you desire - oranges, lemons, limes, tangerine, blood oranges, - pick one citrus fruit to be your base and squeeze the entire contents of this fruit into your sangria. For example, if you choose blood oranges - reserve one to be cut and squeezed into sangria use remaining for garnish.)
More Fruit (Just about anything you have handy, will add to this fruity punch - I like to use strawberries, raspberries, even apples are delicious and look beautiful)
Additional Garnish: Cinnamon Sticks
Mix all ingredients and chill one hour before serving.
Helpful Hint: Be sure to have plenty of cut fruit and seltxer on reserve to top off glasses at the party. This will keep the Sangria from becoming dilluted and will keep the refreshments looking sexy!

These recipes are sure to move the crowd! Thank me tomorrow!

Fashion Icon: Katie Holmes

From her chic bob to her enviable accessories, Katie Holmes has locked down the refined look. She sizzles on the red carpet in a flawless Azzedine Alaia frock and is a hot mama in wide Roland Mouret trousers.

The low-key girl, who couldn't pronounce Badgley Mischka on the red carpet in 1998, undergoes a style transformation. Often photographed shopping and in the front row of fashion shows, Holmes poses for the cover of Harper's Bazaar. Close friend and fashion maverick Victoria "Posh" Beckham styles her for the photo shoot.

After chopping her hair and appearing more fashionable than ever, Holmes is featured in a PEOPLE cover story. It follows her transformation from all-American girl to couture-clad mommy with 1-year-old Suri. The 28-year-old star "has a serenity about her," says Callie Khouri, her director on the upcoming bank heist comedy Mad Money (due in early 2008). "I just think she's in a really happy place. She's obviously in love – with Tom and with her child."

"How do I look?"

When you meet someone for the first time - whether it is a new client, or a potential date - they often subconsciously assess "who" you are in less than 20 seconds. Before you even have a chance to smile or say hello, they have already made many decisions about who you are, and what you are capable of doing.

Are they dismissing you out of hand because of how you look?
Would you like your image to enhance your career?
How would you feel if your image could open more doors for you?
Wouldn’t it be nice to be more comfortable in social situations?
Would you like to learn how to take your business or sales to the next level?
Can you imagine what it would be like if customers or employees took you more seriously?
Wouldn’t it be great to know that your image adds to, not detracts from who you really are?

The attitude that comes with a polished appearance, including your outfit and hair style creates an instant impression and an instant judgment about who you are. When you know that you have sought the help of a professional fashion consultant, you project an image of confidence and authority, and you are far more likely to succeed in both your business and casual relationships.

We schedule a one hour fashion consultation to evaluate your current style (this consultation can be done in-person, online or via telephone). Wardrobe and beauty recommendations will be provided, tailoring a plan just for you. To prepare for your personal transformation, you will be provided with an in-depth questionnaire to complete.

Holiday Party Perfection

On one hand, the holidays can be exciting — yet, on the other hand, they can be panic-inducing. It seems like there's never anything appropriate in your closet to wear to the many different events you'll be attending. Yeah, your ubiquitous black shift dress is always a safe bet, but wouldn't it be nice to wear something different for a change? We think so. Here are six suggestions for what to wear to a holiday party this stylish season.

Holiday cocktail parties call for something slightly seductive. Dresses should be above knee and fabric should be satin, silk, or sparkly. If you are going to a business cocktail party it is best to stay away from looks that are too revealing while a black tie event at a nightclub you can often get away with if done correctly (see Heidi Klum). If your gong ultra-formal think wedding or charity event - a long gown is appropriate. Here's some of my fave black tie gala looks.

The Concept

Creating a stylish wardrobe does not have to be a huge expense or mean that you must have a ton of stylish clothes in your closet. The objective is to look your very best by making the most of your wardrobe either by mixing and matching what you have or playing up a look with a few key accessories. Sometimes all it takes is the addition of a few key items to transform and breathe new life into a wardrobe that may have become tired or slightly dated.

Apresenta Concept provides a unique method of wardrobe management through a complete individualized process. This service begins with an initial closet audit to evaluate the existing wardrobe as well as a needs assessment (shopping list) to complete and update each season's wardrobe based upon specific needs. This allows your consultant to define your personal style and design a wardrobe plan to fit your lifestyle and budget.

Appropriate styles for one's body shape and lifestyle are the first considerations.

Coordination and building from basics while working with an existing wardrobe allows the most efficient method of planning, eliminates impulse buying and effectively manages the total wardrobe budget. Our technique works within any budget. The final result is a client whose appearance is enhanced by projecting a more confident, self-assured image, whatever the lifestyle.

I'm obsessed with all things jewelry related. I can't get enough. Besides writing about jewelry, looking at jewelry, buying jewelry and scouring local thrift stores for treasures, I enjoy: all things fashion, reading lots of books and magazines, playing with my dog Pickle, cooking (not so good at it, but it's fun!), eating chocolate, traveling, good conversation, yardsaling, drinking coffee 24/7, plotting my return to Paris, and lots of other cool stuff. I am multi-faceted!
